Brian Vargas

Java Backend Developer

Hi, I'm Brian. I got hooked on figuring out how things work underneath, which is how I ended up in backend — building systems that still stand up when real people use them. Lately I've been going deep on cybersecurity and cloud. I'm looking for a team where there's always something left to learn.

Profile

About Me

I'm a software developer with 3+ years building applications, focused on Java and Spring Boot on the backend and full stack capable with Angular and TypeScript. I design REST APIs, model relational databases and deploy with Docker. My profile is hybrid: I bring Cisco Networking Academy coursework (CCNA track) and CCST cybersecurity certification alongside cloud (Google Cloud).

Where I have worked

Experience

The roles I have held, with dates. The projects they produced have their own section.

  1. Founder & Backend Developer — Software Development Club

    2025 — Present

K-Forge · Fundación Universitaria Konrad Lorenz

University software development club I founded and lead: I coordinate the technical team, planning and architecture guidelines. Since 02/2026 I have been building its institutional website, now in production.

  2. Teaching Assistant — three subjects

    07/2024 — 06/2025

Konrad Lorenz University Foundation · Part-time

Selected on academic merit for three consecutive assistantships: Linear Algebra, Programming Techniques I and Programming Techniques II. I ran support sessions on object-oriented programming with Java, algorithmic optimization and debugging, and reviewed student code with a focus on clean-code practice.

Selected work

Projects

Systems I designed, built and shipped. Each one solved a real problem for real users — the code is public where the client allows it.

KApp — University mobile app

My thesis project, in the pre-proposal phase: six Java 21 microservices behind an API Gateway that centralizes routing and JWT validation, with Eureka discovery, OpenFeign inter-service calls, Resilience4j circuit breakers and PostgreSQL auditing. It runs on Docker Compose with CI on JDK 21. Native Kotlin and Swift clients are in development — the deployed demo is a front-end prototype with sample data, not yet wired to the backend.

AMODEL — Differential equations lab

A Minecraft server instrumented as an ecology lab: 27,648 measurements calibrate a logistic ODE with harvesting. The experiment falsified the classical model — a Holling Type II response cuts error by 81–91% in the supercritical regime, where the original predicted a collapse that never happened.
